“Darwin” is the nickname of the team behind this ambitious project, aimed at rehabilitating the Niel barracks on the bank to the right of Garonne. This new space for entrepreneurs, artists and young skaters, has – in just a few short months – become a Sunday must for trendy families in the area. Plenty of space, healthy, balanced cuisine at low prices and a trendy, refectory atmosphere, have all made us fall in love with this new, eco spot.
The Decor
Old sofas, 60s-style dressers, wooden crates and vintage carpets alongside gingham prints and Scottish patterns have transformed these military barracks into a boho canteen. The rustic interior décor contrasts with the contemporary glass roof of the terrace and walkway of carved, wooden rods connecting the two main buildings. The Darwin ecosystem team has transformed this historic wasteland without sacrificing style or hospitality.
The Food
The Monday-Saturday “Ration du Jour” dishes (a flat fee for an entrée and starter or dessert) are mostly made up of fresh and organic local products. We loved the farm chicken with homemade mashed potatoes, cooked to perfection, the veal stew casserole and the fish served over a bed of rice and vegetables from the local market. On Sunday, all guests can enjoy a full brunch. On the menu? Pasta salad, fresh cheeses and charcuterie, scrambled eggs with bacon, along with tea, coffee, orange juice and pastries.
For kids
Each day, the “Guerre de Boutons” menu offers chicken, meat or fish fingers with a choice of fries or mashed potatoes, followed by a scoop of ice cream (organic, of course). But best of all, this spot has a “military tent” for little soldiers, always filled with toys and books to enjoy.
We love the never-ending exhibitions, conferences and concerts on weekends, keeping you entertained from brunch to happy hour.
