A boutique hotel, bar and restaurant in central Athens, New Hotel is designed to be both eco-responsible and playful, with four-star quality service. Families flock here on Sundays for their famous “New Taste” brunch, served on the rooftop in summer.
The Décor
In the heart of Athens, not far from Syntagma Square (the center of Greek Parliament), designers Fernando and Humberto Campana have created a team of architecture and design students to transform the former Olympic Palace hotel into a chic and trendy venue – a new place to showcase contemporary art in Athens. The Brazilian duo has chosen not to dispose of the hotel’s old furniture, but rather to dismantle, recycle and reassemble the materials, giving them new life. The result can be seen in the lobby, now lined with Baroque chairs, tables, frames and even dismembered headboards…
The Location
Throughout the hotel’s 79 bedrooms and throughout hallways, one can clearly see unique elements of the young designers – from the Hanger Chair created by the school workshop to the original paintings, sculptures and installations of Greek and Mediterranean contemporary artists. More than a museum, New Hotel is truly a cabinet of curiosities, filled with playful and colorful details. We especially like the Karagiozis-themed rooms – a nod to the hero of Greek shadow theatre – with pink walls covered in mythological frescoes and gilded steel. The rooftop bar and the restaurant “New Taste”, located on the ground floor, are all open to visitors and non-guests. Sunday brunch has almost become an institution for Athenians, who often book a week in advance to enjoy the eggs Benedict with San Daniele or waffles with bananas, walnuts and pecan caramel sauce.
For the Children
Unlike most design hotels, New Hotel’s atmosphere is far from stilted, and children are more than welcome here. Greeted on arrival with colouring books, the hotel also provides toys and books to keep them busy while parents enjoy dinner. Sunday brunch is a family affair, and there is nothing on the menu that children wouldn’t love.
Les Louves loves the elegant New Sense Spa hidden in the hotel’s basement, with a sauna, jacuzzi and wonderful selection of services and massages, including Dermalogica facials and Yon-Ka body treatments.
